As part of the project, HNTB landscape architects  designed small passive recreation public spaces along the roadway. These small parks include green infrastructure to collect and filter stormwater run-off, while providing the community with new gathering spaces with benches, special paving and lighting. They also collaborated with HNTB structural engineers to create safe and comfortable bicyclist/pedestrian access and provided landscape design and restoration on the Queens approach at First Calvary Cemetery. When working with other Architects as part of a team, we are able to quickly grasp the design intent and offer architectural detailing support if requested. The design-build contract focuses on constructing the northern interchange of Business Loop 81 (BL 81) and Interstate 81 (I-81) and reconstructing the new section of I-81 (former I-481) between Kirkville Road and the New York State Thruway (I-90). However, only work on the first three of eight planned contracts may currently proceed.
